After I saw Superfly at the Pink House for the first time in the early 90s, my housemate Jay Murray got his hands on Curtis Mayfield's The Anthology 1961-1977, and it went into heavy rotation on our communal stereo system. This cut was an instant favorite.
This Joint of the Back-In-The-Day first charted on Cash Box's Top 100 Singles charts on November 28, 1970, reaching #72 with a bullet. It would peak at #24 nine weeks later on January 30, 1971.

Cover of the seminal track Phil Spector produced for Ike & Tina Turner. This version of River Deep, Mountain High, with vocals by Diana Ross' replacement, newly installed member Jean Terrell, made it to #7 on the Billboard R&B charts and #14 on the Billboard Hot 100. It was produced by Ashford & Simpson and became the highest-charting version of this song released in the U.S, since Ike & Tina's original did far worse. That failure greatly rocked Phil Spector's world and sent him into the downward spiral that eventually led to the unraveling of his career.
The Supremes-Four Tops rendition first charted on Cash Box's Top 100 Singles charts on November 21, 1970, reaching #77 with a bullet. It would peak at #15 six weeks later on January 2, 1971.

Live performance from 1972 of Al Green killing it with his cover of the Norman Whitfield-penned Temptations track. I Can't Get Next To You originally went to #1 Pop and #1 R&B on the Billboard charts in the fall of 1969. This version was the title track from Al's 1971 LP Al Green Gets Next To You, and made it to #60 Pop and #11 R&B.
Al Green's version first hit Cash Box's Top 100 Singles charts on November 14, 1970, reaching #96. It would peak at #70 five weeks later on December 19, 1970.

This qualifies as my second favorite Chairmen of the Board track (with "Saginaw County Line" from 1972's Bittersweet LP taking top honors). Pay To The Piper was a single off their second record, 1971's In Session, and made it to #13 on the Billboard Hot 100, and #4 R&B.
The track first hit Cash Box's Top 100 Singles charts on November 7, 1970, reaching #83 with a bullet. It would peak at #10 six weeks later on January 16, 1971.
