A little more digging turned up a photo of the place!
The House of Sight & Sound circa 1960s, located at Van Nuys and Victory in the San Fernando Valley
And Billboard ran a complete article on the spot, dated 7/4/64, confirming it was THE main record store in the area, and also sold a full line of stereo equipment, TV's, even pianos. That's pretty cool. Billboard reported that "S&S customers primarily purchase middle of the road LP's, but jazz purchases are starting to increase as a result of new people into the Valley," according to Jerry Johnson, the store's owner.

I lived in Van Nuys in the late fifties and early sixties. My dad used to buy tubes for our B&W TV there.
ReplyDeleteI worked there, in the record department, in 1962 & 1963. Big, busy store and fun job!
ReplyDeleteI used to buy all of my records and music sheets from there in the 60's. Does anyone have the original address of this store
ReplyDeleteI believe in 1971 that I purchased Ticketmaster or Ticketron tickets there. I think it was on the north side of Victory Blvd., just west (about 50- 100') of Van Nuys Blvd.
DeleteH of S & S used to advertise a lot on KMPC , and I still remember the melody that accompanied those ads . Must have
ReplyDeletebeen pretty catchy .
Yea ! that ad music (melody) is still in my head too, after all these years . Let's see 65 yrs plus a few .
DeleteWould love to be able to get the particulars on that jingle . I can play it, whistle it _ _ but there are very few people around now that would remember : the store , the ad , the place and era .
Yeah, I worked there too. About 1956-57 while attending VNHS. I was a stock clerk, which meant stocking the records for customer perusal, cleaning the sound booths, and hauling Magnavox TVs and HiFi's out of the warehouse in back. I remember almost everyone who was there.
ReplyDeleteI have a pilot tube console that was originally purchased there. I'm the 2nd owner.
ReplyDeleteI am Mark Peabody/Fulton adopted. My dad was Stanford Peabody, and was also an owner of The House of Sight & Sound. As a young boy I would go to work with dad and usually would dust all of the TV's and what not, and for payment, Dad would let me pick out albums from the store. I sure do miss him.
